If you play in a superflex league, you already know the premium you leaguemates put on the position is insane. I mean totally crazy. Never in my life have I seen a group of ten guys (or gals) throw caution to the wind so carelessly. Most people who play in this format concur that if you are the strongest in the league at the quarterback position, you’re in the drivers seating. In other words, you are superflexing your guns.
I am on the opposite side of this argument. Personally, I believe if someone has a positional edge over you at the quarterback position, you should have an advantage on them at every other position.
People value quarterbacks so highly in these types of leagues, I was able to make the most lop-sided deal of my dynasty fantasy football career. In a startup draft I am currently doing, I drew the 1.01. For me, making a selection there is just leaving a ton of value on the table. So of course, I hade to make a trade.
Gave: 1.01
Received: 1.08 and 3.09
So essentially I traded Aaron Rodgers for Matthew Stafford and Giovani Bernard, which is a huge win for me. I was more than happy to accept that deal. I ended up trading the 3.09 shortly afterwards for this deal below.
Gave: 3.09
Received: 5.09, 10.03 and a 2015 first round pick.
It’s crazy to think the 1.01 turned into Matthew Stafford, 5.09, 10.02 and a 2015 first round pick. Just for trading back seven spots.
When the fifth round finally came around, I looked at my team and wasn’t completely satisfied with the direction it was headed in. There is nothing wrong with adapting your strategy on the fly, so I sent a message to the league letting everyone know Stafford was available. Within about two minutes, I had a bite. He told me he wanted Stafford pretty bad and he’d be willing to make a blockbuster trade in order to obtain his services. Keep in mind this next trade may not be suitable for underage readers.
Gave: Matthew Stafford
Received: Sammy Watkins, 6.03 (Carlos Hyde), 10.03, 2015 1st and a 2016 1st.
Is that not insane? I could play dynasty for 200 years and probably never make a trade like this again. I’m still I a bit of a catatonic state about the whole thing. Honestly, he accepted the offer without even countering.
Currently we are in the eighth round of this startup and my roster looks like this:
QB: Ryan Tannehill
RB: Christine Michael, Carlos Hyde
WR: Alshon Jeffery, Keenan Allen, Sammy Watkins, Brandin Cooks, Jordan Matthews
TE: Eric Ebron (this is a must start 2TE league)
I’ve also acquired three additional first round picks. Two of them are for 2015 and one is for 2016. Needless to say, this team is off to the races and (at least in my opinion) will be a powerhouse for years to come.
That is why superflexing your guns and trading a top flight quarterback in this format can setup your dynasty for years. I’m not saying everyone should try it, but it is definitely worth thinking about.
