Knowing your league settings is a vital aspect of startup draft preparation as well as every move an owner makes throughout its exsistence. One of the most influenced positions I see from format to format is the quarterback position.
The quarterback position has the most variation of value from my experience. The scoring can go from a suppressed 4pt per passing touchdown all the way to 6pt passing touchdowns with yardage and other bonuses. That does not even address going from a 10-to-12 team, start-one format to superflex and requried start-two leagues. Running backs and wide receivers seem elementary by comparison.
Up until a week or so ago my dynasty rankings-values excel sheet encompassed a singular middle-of-the-road set of scoring and starting requirements. I look back at that ‘former self” shaking my head in disapproval. I am not a heavy player in QB-premium leagues, but still have a variety of league settings that were plain not accounted for in my database.
So I set to work creating a roadmap and feeder pages for a few different settings based on my current leagues. Quarterbacks, as mentioned in the open, were the most impacted position – by far. Here are a few examples:
Using a straight forward cutoff point in my overall values, 10 units (do not worry about the context of that number for now), here is how the overall positional mix breaks down by league format:
12-teams, start 1 QB, 1 RB, 2 WR, 1 TE, 2 RB-WR-TE flex, 5pt passing TD, PPR
55 players with value of 10+ units
10 QBs
6 RBs
8 TEs
31 WRs
Now, constrast that with the same baseline for the following settings:
12-teams, start 1 QB, 1 RB, 1 WR, 1 TE, 4 flex, 4pt passing TD, PPR
41 players with value of 10+ units
4 QBs
5 RBs
6 TEs
25 WRs
With the greater importance of RB-WR and the depressed scoring for quarterbacks, the landscape of raw value shifts.
Finally, here is a 10-team, start 2 QB, 2 RB, 3 WR, 1 TE, 2 flex, 5pt passing TD, PPR
45 players with value of 10+ units
12 QBs
6 RBs
4 TEs
23 WRs
With 20 starting quarterbacks weekly compared to 12, there is a major increase in the value of the lower QB1-types and even high-end QB2s.
Each of the above examples shows how quarterbacks are the most-impacted by and large. In addition it shows the depressed state of the running back position on my personal board at the present time.
Every league is a little bit different, which is why it is paramount to spend some time prior to the initial startup draft (ideally) or during an offseason to check out the positional scoring and values from the past few seasons.
