Chances are your rookie drafts are over and you’re probably feeling like your waiver wire has been picked clean by a pack of ravenous vultures. Never fear because UTH is here with a super-sleeper profile for all of you 2QB/Superflex die-hards out there. Let me introduce you to the newest edition to the St. Louis Ram’s quarterback trio, Garrett Gilbert.
Out of the sake of habit, let’s start out with Garrett Gilbert’s measurables.
Garrett Gilbert: Pro Day Results
Height: 6’4”
Weight: 221 lbs
40 Yard Dash: 4.81 sec
Vertical: 29.5”
Three Cone Drill: 7.30 sec
Short Shuttle: 4.43 sec
Broad Jump: 9’9”
Garrett Gilbert saw his draft stock improve drastically after his SMU pro day. He was insanely accurate completing 87 of 88 passes in front of representatives from 25 different NFL teams, while also impressing Gil Brandt quite a bit. Brandt may be Gilbert’s biggest supporter at this time and truly believes this kid has a future in the NFL.
Strengths
You have to love the size of this guy first of all. He’s basically exactly what you’re looking for from a size perspective. All of his other measurables suggest he should be plenty mobile enough in the pocket and could occasionally pick up a first down or two with his feet. You may or may not remember that Gilbert was a five star recruit that started his career with the Texas Longhorns before transferring to SMU. The transfer to SMU proved to be a lucrative one for Gilbert as he was able to work with quarterback guru June Jones, resurrect his collegiate career and ultimately get drafted by the St. Louis Rams. Gilbert also has the arm strength to every NFL throw, which may be the reason he gets a shot a significant playing time at some point in his career.
Weaknesses
Early in Gilbert’s collegiate career while at Texas, he struggled pretty badly with accuracy. His coaches and scouts often stated Gilbert lacked touch and tended to overthrow his wide receivers. Especially on deep routes. His played uninspiring football at best while at Texas which led to him transferring to SMU and playing against lesser competition.
My Take
I think Garrett Gilbert is in a pretty good situation. Sam Bradford has been injured quite a bit over the course of his relatively short NFL career and it’s not out of the realm of possibility for Gilbert to see playing time in his rookie year.
I think the best part about Gilbert is – he’s absolutely free. He isn’t being selected in rookie drafts at all, so you can comfortably wait until your startup or rookie drafts are over and pick him up on the waiver wire.
You might as well pick this guy up at least through training camp and see if he generates any buzz, or perhaps Bradford gets injured again. Either way, there is absolutely no risk in holding him for a little while, especially in superflex leagues.
