Duron Carter was officially added to the myfantasyleague.com player database today. In many dynasty leagues, he was already rostered with a placeholder. Here is some information on Duron Carter as he prepares for his shot at the NFL:
Duron Carter is hall of famer Cris Carter. Like his dad he plays wide receiver. He was a highly-regarded high school prospect in 2009, signing with Ohio State. After 13 receptions as a freshman, he left the team (grades) for Coffeyville Community College. In 2010, Carter performed well at CCC (could be right, who knows) alongside Quinton Patton, a 2013 NFL drafted receiver who went on to Louisiana Tech and the 49ers. In 2011, Carter was back on the big stage with Alabama, but grades kept him from playing. Again changing scenes, Carter moved on to Florida Atlantic, where he again did not get on the football field. In 2013, he also tried out for Minnesota Vikings. Finally, in 2013 and this season, Carter played in the CFL on the Montreal Alouettes. Glancing at the 2014 roster, shows a few names dynasty owners would recognize like Chris Rainey, Mardy Gilyard, Jonathan Crompton, Tyrell Sutton, and even Chad Johnson. That will be a long road from high school to the NFL for Duron Carter.
Duron Carter: Athleticism
This is strictly from pro day measurements all the way back in 2013.
Carter has prototypical height for an NFL outside receiver at 6’3″, but at 206 (his weight at 2013 pro day), that is on the thin side. We will see if that has changed since when the draft circuit gets underway. Running is the high-4.5s or 4.60 in the 40 is also concerning. His three-cone and broad jump measurements are in the average range, but a 33″ vertical and lineman-like 20-yard shuttle hurt his athleticism score. Overall, the model has him with a score of 38 in the category. Here are some historical comparisons using that information:
- Justin Brown
- Kevin Norwood
- Rueben Randle
- Marvin Jones
- Derek Moye
- Austin Pettis
- Brandon LaFell
- Tandon Doss
- Michael Clayton
- Justin Harper
- J.R. Russell
- Marcus Henry
- Courtney Taylor
Not a dazzling list, but at least a name here or there with some NFL and fantasy relevance.
Duron Carter: Production
Here is where it gets dicey. Carter essentially did not play outside of his community college season and the past two years with the CFL. The good news is that Carter broke out at 19 years old at Coffeyville with 32% of the team yards and 56% of the team touchdowns, outplaying Quinton Patton, who was a fourth round NFL draft pick. In 2013, Duron Carter posted 20% of the team yards and 19% of the touchdowns. He followed that up with 28% of the yards and 44% of the touchdowns in 2014. Using that information (the best we have), Carter has a production score of 87 in the projection model. That falls in line with Rueben Randle and Michael Clayton from the athleticism comparable list above and adds in small school phenom Eric Rogers that some will remember me spouting about leading up to the 2013 NFL draft.
Final Take
Duron Carter is certainly worth stashing, even in 22-man roster dynasty formats if allowed to pick him up. As an example, I dropped Heath Miller for him in that depth of league as a strong contender. There is a wide range of outcomes even from now until the NFL draft regarding Carter, but the upside is more than basically any rostered player outside the top-15 to top-18 on a dynasty roster.
According to this article by Adam Stites (@AdamBCC), Carter can begin working out for teams on December 1st and can sign officially in February. Ideally, more workout data is available on Carter to paint a more accurate athletic profile. The production checks out based on his age-weighted numbers within the offenses at CCC and the CFL. Be aggressive in acquiring Carter as soon as possible, otherwise check back for more analysis if he is a part of the 2015 rookie draft class in your dynasty league.
