As dynasty experts, sometimes we take for granted people understand some of the lingo we use on our podcast and right here at UTHDynasty.com. In order to make sure everyone is on the same page, we have decided to put together a glossary to define exactly what we are talking about. Whether you are a dynasty newbie or a grizzled veteran, sometimes it can help having a reference point to give clear-cut answers.
ADP – average draft position. Collected from mock or real drafts to get a general sense of the player value marketplace.
VBD – value based drafting (credit Joe Bryant). Measuring the player’s fantasy worth not by their total points scored, but their advantage of their positional peers.
Package Up – the process of using multiple pieces or picks to either move up in your rookie drafts or obtain a more highly regarded player, saving a roster spot in the process.
Over a Barrel – taking it to a trade partner by getting the absolute maximum (and as Matt Williamson would say “a little bit more”) value for what you’re giving away when the other owner has to have a particular player/asset.
Honeymoon Period – the first 6-12 months after your initial startup draft.
Shawshank Tears – overwhelming tears of joy when a player escapes from a horrendous situation or team.
Shower Cry – reaction to a poor fantasy result, player injury, or horrible trade. Literally crying in the shower.
In a Vacuum – common phrase where dynasty team situation or league format/scoring is not factored into the recommendation.
Age Insulation – the theory that if a player is young enough, he is relatively unaffected by a poor season or serious injury.
Law of Averages – the theory in which one out of ten trade proposals will be accepted if you are making strong offers.
Rule of 27 – once a running back hits 27 years old, it is mathematically proven his days are numbered. There are a few outliers over the years, but in most cases, holding past 27 is playing with fire.
Rule of 29 – once a wide receiver hits the age of 29, he may have a couple of years of solid production ahead of him, but his trade value in dynasty leagues drops dramatically.
BPA – best player available.
1.01 – the first overall pick in a dynasty startup or rookie draft (1.02 would be the second overall pick and so on).
Rebuild – realizing the chances of you competing with little to no talent on your roster is futile. So you start selling off your most valuable remaining pieces for multiple pieces/picks and start all over.
Orphan – taking over a dynasty team that was abandoned by its previous owner.
YAC – yards after catch.
YPC – yards per carry/catch.
YPA – yards per (passing) attempt.
PPG – the average amount of “points per game” scored by any particular player.
PPR – point per reception.
Non-PPR – zero points awarded for any catch.
1/2 PPR – only half of a point is awarded per catch.
IDP – individual defensive player.
Flex Spot – a starting roster spot where you have the ability to start multiple positions in a single spot.
Developmental Leagues (Devy) – the ability to draft players for your dynasty roster(s) still playing college football…or high school…or catch in the yard with their fellow 8-year-old friends.
Rookie Draft – a draft that is composed of only the incoming rookie class.
Rookie/FA Draft – a draft that includes both rookies and free agents.
Tight End Premium Leagues – a league in which 1.5 points are rewarded for every catch a tight end makes.
Two Tight End Leagues – a league in which you must start two tight ends every week.
Two Quarterback Leagues -a league in which you must start two quarterbacks every week.
Superflex Leagues – a league in which you can start a quarterback, running back, wide receiver or tight end in your last flex spot.
Shares – term used to describe how many leagues we own a specific player.
Banana Hands – a term to describe a player with enormous hands, i.e. Odell Beckham Jr. The first such use was on the inaugural Under the Helmet episode in 2011, referring to Kyle Rudolph.
Dispersal Draft – draft in which multiple dynasty owners quit the league and the new owners conduct a draft based on the players the owners who left the league had on their rosters.
Stash Player – player you feel has enough upside to be a future contributor, but occupies one of your last roster spots.
Auto-Accept – a trade that hits your inbox which you cannot accept fast enough.
Taxi Squad – a group of a set number of players that are not on your active roster. You may activate and start them at any time. They are a stash player which was described above.
Roster Clogger – a player you just cannot bring yourself to cut, yet he provides no value to your roster.
JAG – just another guy
Change of Pace (COP) – running back in a limited role, typically as a pass-catching option but sometimes as an early down thumper or short-yardage back.
Long Term Value – the value you think a player has over the next 3-5 years vs. his older counterparts.
Middling Asset – a player with a low ceiling and also hard to trade
Punting Quarterback – waiting until the late rounds of your startup drafts to draft high upside/young talent. In essence, letting all the premier quarterbacks pass you by.
Upside – the potential you see in a player based on college production and athletic traits.
Ceiling – the best case scenario for a player.
Floor – the absolute worst you think a player could produce.
UTH Way – the mindset of getting your guys/targets lined up during the first 12-18 months of your dynasty league. It also means taking a youth-based approach to your startup draft by acquiring more picks/players/rookie picks and trading back when you can.
Startup Draft – the first draft where the entire player pool is available.
Three-Year Window – the amount of time you think a player or your team will be relevant/contenders.
Stop-Gap – a player used to temporarily fill a hole until other talent on your roster develops.
FAAB – free agent acquisition budget – money used to acquire players outside of rookie drafts or first-come, first-serve periods in a league.
FCFS – first come, first serve (for waivers)
Contract Situation – the amount of time before a player’s contract is up, or, when you could see a player being released due to the salary cap.
Toilet Bowl – the opposite of the championship game where the two worst teams in the league square off in a fight to not be the ultimate basement dweller.
Salary Cap League – a league using contracts and a dollar amount for every player on your roster.
Man Weight – the weight a player usually puts on during his first 1-3 years in the league.
