“I’ve learned in my life that it’s important to be able to step outside your comfort zone and be challenged with something you’re not familiar or accustomed to. That challenge will allow you to see what you can do.”
J.R. Martinez
Challenging yourself is amazing and one thing I always urge people to do is to step outside their comfort zone and try different formats in dynasty. The new format I have explored is the Superflex and 2QB leagues. This format is taking off due to the lack of value on the quarterback position in dynasty fantasy football. This series will hopefully not only give you a better understanding of the quarterback position, but also help you better develop your philosophy and strategy when diving into this format. This article will be focusing on the idea of Quality Quantity over just Quantity.
In your normal start one quarterback dynasty league you will often find quarterbacks are a dime a dozen. Any starter can come in and put up reasonable points to help you win your game. In two quarterback and superflex formats there is more strategy involved, but I urge you not to overspend on quarterbacks. There are plenty of “QB2s” out there can still up solid production for you team. In fact over the past five years there have only been seven quarterbacks who have been in the top 20 of fantasy points for a quarterback every year.
Andy Dalton
Cam Newton
Drew Brees
Matt Ryan
Matthew Stafford
Philip Rivers
Tom Brady
From this list you can quickly tell two things from this list. Three of the seven quarterbacks are now under 30 years old and have a good chance of multiple years of producing as a top 20 quarterback left and the other is all of these quarterbacks, with the exception of Tom Brady, were selected in the top 40 picks of the NFL draft. To go even deeper only seven of the 37 different quarterbacks who have scored in the top 20 of were selected outside of the top 40 picks of the NFL draft.
So if you are going to take your shot on quarterback you should focus on quarterbacks with good draft pedigree (Goff, Lynch, and Wentz all should be in the mix). There is a reason why they were drafted high and they will have their shot to produce for your team for multiple years.
