Noteworthy Moves

I took over an orphan team in this acclaimed league in the spring of 2013. I promptly made half a dozen trades prior to the 2013 season, which resulted in a league championship. I looked to retool and get younger prior to 2014, but without an appealing deal, I rode my aging vets looking for a repeat title.

3.3.2014 Traded EJ Manuel for Terrelle Pryor, 3.01, 2015 3rd

I targeted a team light at quarterback and remember, this is when Manuel still had a job and promise. I set my sights low and was estatic to give two thirds in return. The 3.01 pick ended up as Jarvis Landry – a huge win – and the 2015 3rd is now set as 3.10.

3.29.2014 Traded Latavius Murray, 3.03 for Knile Davis

I owned Jamaal Charles and Davis is one of the few backup running backs in the NFL to have high upside if the starter were to go down and have independent dynasty value. Nine months removed, I prefer Murray and the 3.03 (which turned into Charles Sims), but it is not a blowout loss.

5.10.2014 Traded 1.09, 2.09, 2.12 for 1.05, 4.07, 4.10

I traded up during the rookie draft to nab Brandin Cooks at 1.05. I added John Brown and Jerick McKinnon with the pair of 4th rounders. On the other side of the deal, Jordan Matthews, Isaiah Crowell, and Martavis Bryant were the selections. Too early to declare a long-term winner of this deal, but on my value board, the Matthews-Crowell-Bryant side has more value as of today.

8.31.2014 Added Albert Wilson

Happy with this pickup headed into the offseason, considering up to five receivers start each week.

10.16.2014 Was Offered Jeremy Hill, 2015 1st for Jamaal Charles

Not only would this deal have helped him down the stretch of 2014, the long-term value is clearly on the other side to boot. The 1st ended up as 1.07. Was shopping Jamaal Charles midseason, but could not find a deal I liked enough…unfortunately this one was right in front of me.

10.19.2014 Was Offered Donte Moncrief, 2015 1st, 2015 2nd for Jamaal Charles, Knile Davis

I pushed for two 1st rounders in the deal, which did not materialize. The picks ended up as 1.05 and 2.05, higher than I projected at the time. Today, I would take the deal, but I stuck to my guns midseason as I was a projected playoff team.

11.16.2014 Was Offered Jordy Nelson for Davante Adams, 2015 1st

Adding Nelson would have been a big boost late in the season as my starting lineup was thin on the back end. The 1st ended up as 1.09, but may have been a spot or two lower with Nelson added.

12.10.2014 Added Crockett Gillmore

Locked up one of my favorite tight end stashes with Owen Daniels an upcoming free agent in Baltimore.

The Season

After a 1-3 start, I rebounded with a 3-1 second quarter of the season. I was high ranking in points scored halfway through the season, which is why I was higher on my chances than my 4-4 record. I had a shot at an all-important bye week going into the last week of the regular season, but missed out. After a first round playoff victory, I lost to the top seed by less than six points in the semifinals. While the prize pool travels deep and I had a successful season, riding older veterans without a finals appearance feels a little dirty following the season.

Outlook

Despite two straight playoff runs in a row as taking over the team, I am uneasy about the future for roster and I have my work cut out. While still in the top tier of teams in the league according to my personal power rankings, the competition is fierce amongst two other top dynasty owners. LeSean McCoy and Jamaal Charles are basically must holds until September with their tepid 2014 seasons. Aaron Rodgers, Demaryius Thomas, and Rob Gronkowski are excellent core assets, but my fate in 2015 will come down to the range of outcomes for Michael-McKinnon-Turbin at running back and Adams-Johnson at wide receiver. If a slow start occurs next season, a few players will most certainly be shopped aggresively.
